Air Travel / Ferry

We have just looked up cost of flights to Sharm compared to Hurghada and noticed a great difference in price namely 85 to sharm 311 to Hurghada. We have been told that a ferry leaves sharm 3 days each week which costs something in the region of l0pounds each way. Anybody know anything about this and have they travelled on it before. It looks like there is a considerable difference in the prices to each resort and not sure how you can travel anyother way ie luxor or marsa alam. Anybody looked into this ?

Hi that is very interesting, how long is the journey sharm to Hurghada?,the only downside is, I believe you have to return from the same city as you arrive at so you would have to go Back to Sharm.
But interesting.looked at some flights to Sharm last night they were around £150 per person from london or manchester.

Does anyone know for sure if you have to fly in and fly out of the same airport (back to the UK). I'm trying to arrange a trip to El Gouna plus a Nile Cruise and it would be easier to fly into Hurghada and out of Luxor if possible.

Hi Distantdreamer I have actually done that trip and it is possible using schedule flights through Air Egypt; I don't know about charters you would need to check with your travel agent. From Hurghada to Luxor you can book a Limo for about 35 - 40 GBP (this is not a 'stretch', just a half decent newish taxi!). You have to join a police escorted convoy to Luxor but the car firm will arrange that.

Have you checked with the firm that is organising the cruise, we booked a few years ago with kuoni we flew into luxor and stayed for 4 nights Sheriton hotel then flew to cairo and stayed 3 nights Meridian then flew home from cairo. If you book flights seperate check with flight company.

what we were thinking of doing was flying into sharm if flights were cheap enuf. Catching ferry from sharm to hurghada where our apt will be which we believe costs approx. 20.00 and then returning by ferry from hurghada to catch flight from sharm. It sounds long winded but may be very much cheaper

by the way journey by ferry believed to be a further 90 minutes and only one crossing in the morning and evening

Just treat the ferry trip as part of your holiday! If it saves you that amount of cash its worth doing...

All Nile cruises start and end in Luxor.

Lets hope the hurghada flights from London continue (the old GB route) and keep our fingers crossed for them to be tied in from Manchester as well. Easyjet have announced this week new flight plans from Manchester starting 2008 but there are no exact route confirmations available yet BUT they did say that some routes from Manchester may go via Gatwick depending on demand .....interesting! FINGERS CROSSED!!!

I think it depends who you get in customer services at easy jet to what answer you receive.
We are all hoping they do keep the routes up and running especially at the easyjet prices, that would be good.

It certainly is another way to get to Hurghada.
However what might happen if we all start to use this route, maybe further flight cuts.
I think there are obvious reasons on why XL have cancelled certain routes to Hurghada from the UK.
The flights are there they are just a bit expensive compared to other destinations of the same flight time.
The ferry is certainly worth looking at especially if you could tailor a two centre holiday, that would work out quite well.

Tips for internal flights with Egyptair and XL

Hi all

Just wanted to share a little tip I have with you all although some may already know it.

When you are booking your internal flights with Egyptair for example Sharm to Luxor when you enter the site ensure that you choose the Egypt country from the pick list in the box on the righthand corner and not UK. You will get cheaper prices. But be warned that the prices have shot up. Last June I was paying £30 return and last month paid over £60!! By picking the Egypt one you can get them for up to half the price that they are selling by picking the UK one.

Also if you just turn up at the airport eg Gatwick you may be lucky enough to get on a standby. When I was last in Gatwick XL were selling them for £99 return. This will be great for home owners abroad and if you just want to go on the of chance of getting a cheap flight. dont be too disappointed if you cant get one though. I will certainly try this as we only live 20 mins from the airport as well. Has anyone else out there tried this and been successful??
