Do I need to own my own property first before getting a buy to let mortgage?

Not necessarily but I think a lot of mortgage lenders would prefer you to have "experience" through owning your own property. However, it all comes down to finances in the end - if you have the income to support a mortgage then you have every chance of being successful in raising finance.
