Will the UK government ever make up the housing shortfall?

For decades now the number of new properties authorised by the UK authorities has been far less than that required by the property market. Many believe that this is the main reason why UK property prices continue to squeeze higher and while the government has announced plans for a major increase in new homes from 2014 onwards, is this enough?

Many experts believe that the authorities have left it too late to make up for the historic housing shortfall and at best it could take decades to catch up.
