The UK expat love affair with Spain may be derailed in the short term due to the Brexit issue but longer term this will continue. For many British expats looking to move to pastures new Spain is the obvious choice for so many different reasons. Why would the Spanish government look to wreck their own coastal economy and property market?

Why would the Spanish authorities want to shoot themselves in the foot and force UK expats to return home and sell their Spanish properties? Is there not enough unwanted property already in Spain!

Exactly, why would the Spainish authorities want to shoot themselves in the foot? Some of Spain's coastal communities depend on expat money to survive. They will find a compromise with the UK authorities, of that there is no doubt.

It is in the best interests of the UK authorities and their European counterparts to come to some kind of arrangement regarding access to the single market.
