Why do we pay stamp duty?

While we take it for granted, we just pay stamp duty on shares, property and many other things, why do we pay stamp duty? What is the legitimate reason behind charging stamp duty? Have you ever thought about it?

Fees which depend upon the value of an asset are flawed. It does not take more time and effort to transfer ownership of an asset worth £100,000 than one worth £1m - so why do we pay more? More importantly, why arent we asking the question?

It is the same with things such as VAT, capital gains, inheritance tax, etc - we just pay them all but why?

Inheritance tax is one I dont understand - we are literally taxed to death when we are alive (income tax, capital gains tax, VAT, etc) and then we are literally taxed to death when we die :)

The UK tax systems needs a complete overhaul but it will never happen as no government would ever risk upsetting businesses, workers and investors - and subsequently losing votes :)

We are stuck with what we have now :(
