Ah, Tokyo. Home to over 12.8 million people – 358,400 (2.8%) of them expats.

That’s an awful lot of expats in one place, and they certainly aren’t going there for the cheap drinks. According a cost of living survey conducted by the HR consultancy Mercer, Tokyo is the world’s most expensive city.

Here, we look at the top 5 properties for rent in the world’s priciest expat city!

Which would be YOUR dream expat property?

Kannami-cho district

At £1,424,668.10, this 2-bed, 2-bath property isn’t exactly what you would describe as a bargain. The property stands at 1983sq/ft – hardly cavernous! On the plus side, the views are spectacular and the house itself was designed by renowned Japanese Architect Shigeru Ban. It also features an outdoor bath (fancy!) with a natural hot spring and underfloor heating throughout the property.

Tone-gun, Gunma district

Got £5,751,828.6957 spare? You’ll need it to secure this ski-chalet-style villa in the Gunma district located within commutable distance of Tokyo (about 35 minutes away). The Minakami Kogen villa has 7 bedrooms (and 8 bathrooms). It’s about 42,015 sq/ft in size – has 3 golf courses nearby and boasts expansive dining area; this property has been designed with entertaining in mind.

Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo

Check out those views! This simply amazing apartment is currently for sale at £2,379,979.9875. It covers 1687,26 sq/ft, stretching over 3 bedrooms and (only) one bathroom. The apartment block itself comes with some great benefits, including party rooms for hire within the same building and even some spare guest rooms!

Hirakawacho penthouse, central Tokyo

Location is central to this Hirakawacho property. Perhaps that’s why this 3-bed, 4-bath property can command its extravagant price tag of £5,632,824.9797. Situated just next to the infamous Imperial Palace, with the Prime Minister’s office and the Supreme Court within walking distance, it’s the ideal location for a busy professional looking for a home close to the office.

The building boasts excellent facilities, including a fitness and relaxation suite, a 4-level security system (with 24-hour security) concierge, and an open deck and sky lounge for enjoying the stunning views of the Tokyo skyline.

Kitkamakura

If modern, minimalist apartments aren’t your thing – how about this traditional Japanese town house? It’s currently on the market at £ 3,847,774.8232. With a well-maintained and expansive garden, this property is all about outdoor living. A good thing, since Tokyo temperatures can reach up to 30-35 degrees centigrade.

The house features 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, all within grounds of 40,149 sq/ft. This property was actually relocated to Kamakura City, where it now sits adjacent to the Kamakura City Park. Positioned within a private rock garden, giving the house a private, sheltered feel, this house is perfect for those who want to feel as if they aren’t living in the big city!
