One of the times I was travelling around looking at developments I was visiting London, Atlanta, Panama City, Fortaleza, Sao Paulo, Natal, Salvador and Porto Seguro.

My colleague who was doing the flights for me booked the flight to London, Atlanta, Panama City, Fortaleza, Sao Paulo, Natal, Porto Seguro, San Salvador

Luckily I spotted it before I got on the plane

That is lucky.

I went to Capetown (number 5 on the list) for xmas this year, and didn't really notice much, but then again I was staying in Camp's Bay which is a world away from the Cape Flats where all the trouble is.

I actually have a friend who has made that mistake.

He booked a circuitous trip for a group of friends from the UK to Salvador, Bahia via a few places in the US. An hour out of Miami he realised the water was on the wrong side of the plane, and spoke to a stewardess who advised this was a common mistake.

They landed in San Salvador, were escorted to a hotel, refused permission to leave it, and in the morning were driven back to the aiport and thence back to Miami where they booked new flights to Salvador, Bahia.

He still cannot live down his mistake!!!

The only reason Brazil wasn't on the list

Is because the inspectors were killed in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Both cities are far more dangerous than Cape Town or New Orleans.
Actually Johanesburg is much more dangerous than Cape Town as well.
By the way, what Baltimore is doing on this list?

Do you have any figures to back that up?

I don't have the figures,
I have first hand experience.
I lived for 2 years in Sao Paulo and about the same period in Rio de Janeiro

Sao Paulo is better.

Brazil is a great country to live
but personnaly I would go South or Northeast

Sao Paulo is good to spend a couple weeks shopping, eating(amazing restaurants) and going to theaters

Rio de Janeiro...well, I don't like it at all.

The South and the Northeast have very nice surprises.

Funny - I think you are the first person I've heard who prefers Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, almost everyone I know who has been to Rio prefers it over Sao Paulo.

Edit: Nope just remembered two friends (one is South African) who prefer Sao Paulo.

South Africa is my next destination.
Actually I should be there now, but had some visa problems, so, maybe within a couple weeks I will be in Cape Town.

Regarding Rio de Janeiro X Sao Paulo, if you go to Brazil to spend just a week or two, you can afford to insulate yourself from the poverty and danger in Rio de Janeiro. But if you have to live there...is whole different history.

Sao Paulo is a world class city(yet too big for me),Rio de Janeiro is a big slum that once upon a time was beautiful.
Curiously I still have a house in Rio de Janeiro, but if I was to invest in real estate in Brazil, I would go for Santos, Vitoria or Curitiba. Northeast cities like Aracaju or Joao Pessoa also offer nice deals.

I am not sure about your taste in real estate or cities, but you should enjoy Capetown.

Stay out of the townships, they are much nastier than the favelas.

Rob.

I agree with Rob I have been to Malawi and you cannot venture out after dark.
The shanty towns are more voilent, although I got taken into one where the chauffer lived (ex pat working out there) and they treated us very well, but not if we went alone.

I prefer Rio and have had no problems there, yes it is voilent so are lots of areas in every city in the world. I like Rio, SP is too big.
As investing not sure where is best, personal choice I guess. I like Rio, Buzios (in Rio state) Macieo is lovely, but again people say violent, didn't seem any different to other cities to me.
Any where you travel in the world, research where you are going, listen to people in the know, be sensible and keep your wits about you and you should be ok

Well, when I talk about Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, I am mentioning the capitals. The country side is much better. Buzios, Angra dos Reis, Cabo Frio or Petropolis in Rio de Janeiro state are lovely. Country side Sao Paulo, is fantastic.

This rating is based on the number of Murders /per capita/per year/. I am surprised Chicago and Detroit aren't on the top 10 - (one is probably #11 and the other #12). Theft and Drugs are rampant the world over but are not considered dangerous((?)). I googled "10 most dangerous cities in the world" and it showed a bunch of studies... all listing different cities than the last, so it's all relative.

Commenting on Rio vs. Sao Paulo... I prefer Sao Paulo living, and visiting Rio de Janeiro...too.

Have you ever been to South Africa?
I have lived in South Africa (SA) many years and can only agree that Johannesburg (and Natal, on the Indian Ocean) are considerably more dangerous than Cape Town.
Yet, a few knives in my face (in my own garden and home) were enough to sell and move on.
It's a STUNNING (a word all SA estate agents love to use) country. And great when you like to live in a prison, don't have to work or employ staff, your kids also never need to work, and you have managed to keep most of your money overseas.
Well, basically like Brazil
This is the main reason why not only an ever increasing number of expats and white South Africans move away, also an large number of colored and black people new middle-class members have have enough of the misery, and emigrate.
Police data are shocking, even when they are always much, MUCH lower than in reality.
I could get you some, if you insist.

Camps Bay is a small, luxury part of Greater Cape Town. Although hardly published, so not to shock the tourists, numerous crimes and murders happen there too! They just try and keep it out of the press.
