Whether you are in Spain, Greece, Portugal or many of the other troubled real estate markets, there are literally hundreds of thousands of properties which are currently empty. Should there be laws to reclaim empty properties especially in these troubled times of austerity?

In principle the idea may have some support but in practice this would ruin real estate investment.

I dont agree with claiming. It ruins free market and restricts once freedom. As a homeowner you should not be forced to rent out your place to completely strangers. Being owner give you rights.

The Spanish government should first create laws, which protect homeowners against people who don’t pay. We have dealt with renters who don’t pay their rent. It took us over a year to get a ruling from a judge to get them out of our properties. When we entered, the property was left destroyed. As property owners we could not claim anything.
The government should focus their efforts on regulating the market by protecting not only renters, but also owners.

Banks who don’t rent their property and have been saved by public money, well, they could be forced to rent their properties. They have received tax money.

Spanish government also has to take a look at e.g. the Dutch housing system. They have a system that has worked for ages and allows anybody to access to a home.
