Should listed buildings be protected by law?

It is very easy to knock down a building, start again and change the whole look and character of a particular area, but does this not erase part of the history of countries around the world? While nobody is suggesting that time should not move on, surely sometimes we need to protect listed buildings so we can give those in the future a sense of their history?

We would be interested to hear your views on listed buildings and indeed whether or not they should receive legal protection.
