Should flooded homes receive more government help?

The horrendous weather conditions in the UK continue with more and more homes flooded and areas cut off by deep waters. This prompts the question, should flooded homes receive more government help? How should the authorities handle the problem of home insurance? Are we putting enough investment into flood prevention methods?

Simple answer is, no. But then again, who is to blame? The local authorities for giving planning permission, developers for building on areas susceptible to flooding or is this really just a consequence of the changing environment?

I think it is a combination of greedy developers who go for the cheapest lands, local authorities giving permission to build on said land, combined with the rising sea levels and therefore rising levels of rivers, together all of these factors increase the risk of homes being flooded.

Hi @Veronica

Do you think that households now suffering from flooding should be compensated in any way from local authorities/developers?

Certainly if the properties have been built on land which was known to be at risk. Perhaps if they had to pay compensation there would be less building in future on land that is a known flood risk.
