Rochester Institute of Technology to open in Dubai Silicon Oasis
by Mark Sutton on Tuesday, 10 June 2008 The US Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has signed an agreement with the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) to establish an academic campus at Silicon Oasis.

The university, a leader in offering courses in microprocessors engineering, will build a three million square foot campus at Silicon Oasis, to offer a range of bachelor and masters degrees in engineering, IT and business subjects.

The agreement was signed in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, by Dr William W. Destler, President of RIT and by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum on behalf of DSO.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed said: "The region is rapidly advancing towards a knowledge-based economy and affiliations with reputed international academic institutions will considerably benefit the UAE. As our fast developing economy gears up to face more challenges, the fundamental role of technology in every sector assumes greater significance.

"RIT's presence in the hi-tech park in Dubai will significantly add to the strength and diversity of Dubai's higher educational sector, while facilitating the creation of a skilled pool of talented professionals, especially within the field of technology," he added.

RIT will being offering full time masters degrees in August, from the DSO's own buildings, and will then expand into bachelor courses once its campus is built. Dr Mustafa A.G. Abushagur, will be president and dean of RIT Dubai.

"Dubai is the perfect fit for RIT, given the university's strategic plan to enhance global opportunities for our students. The proximity will also strengthen RIT's relationship and reputation among multi-national corporations by providing them with a competent workforce that is already exposed to operating in a multi-cultural environment," Destler said
