Have the landing lights been turned on yet?
No.
You can find an article on the net of Brazil's biggest weekly magazine "VEJA" titlled: "Aeroporto de Natal: a 15 meses da Copa, 85% da obra está por fazer."
Dated: 14/03/2013.

This means, 15 months to go for the worldcup, till now 85% of the construction still has to be done. (only 15% is ready).
Including recent photographs, (there is nothing there).
The new owner and builder " Inframérica" now declares that it's in the contract, airport must be ready in 2015.
The old airports should be used for the 2014 worldcup.

No surprise there!

Let's try and see whether they will manage to complete the totally unnecessary NEW STADIUM for these 4 matches.
Most likely not ....

Sure, I agree.
And that has never been denied.

Unfortunately how many of those selling property are really REAL ESTATE AGENTS (or Realtors) in the real sense of the word?
Read their impressive websites. They are always something like an Investment consultant, Wealth Advisers or whatever titles they use.
They have even invented their own Association, so that they could become a member of it, and award themselves.
That's what these paper-mill universities around the world do too - they also approve themselves.

It would have been very funny, when it wasn't so extremely sad.
And when not hundreds of genuine property buyers get screwed, every year again.

I agree with you, Norbert, my point is that there are some in this forum who are trustworthy...

Natal airport

Wishful thinking .....

Getting back on topic (new airport). A found this blog of some guy called Heitor with slightly more up-to-date photos of the airport. For those that are interested. Apparently, it should be done by March 2014 (let's say 1 week before the World Cup).

Blog do Heitor Gregorio

Other news. Pro-Transporte state program (Proinveste) to finally start this semester, starting with the connection road between the new bridge and the BR101-Norte. Maybe Santa Claus does exist? ;)

Obras do Pro-transporte serão retomadas este semestre - Obras do Pro-transporte serão retomadas este semestre

It takes months to start-up and test a new airport.
Get the bugs out.
The government hasn't even started to build infrastructure to the airport, roads, bridges etc. The football supporters will have to go there by horse or donkey.

For recent pictures (march-2013) look here:

Construction Aeroporto Internacional São Gonçado do Amarante

You can clearly see the size of the passengers terminal. (Very small for the biggest LA airport, 6th largest in the world). There will be only 6 "fingers", so they can handle only 6 airplanes at the same time.

Other news is that last week (25/03) the biggest domestic carriers TAM and GOL suspended several flight from/to Natal.

TAM: 3 daily flights from/to São Paulo, Salvador and Fortaleza and 4 weekly flights from/to Rio de Janeiro.
GOL : Natal-Recife. If you want to go from/to Natal- Recife, now you will have to go to Fortaleza first and make a connection there.

Both companies had multi billion losses last year, so we can expect more cuts and raise of prices, all over Brazil.

And international flights ?
I can be wrong, but as far as I know there are 4 flights weekly Lisbon-Natal-Lisbon (TAP) and 1 flight weekly done by a dutch charterer (divided with Fortaleza).

2 weeks ago TAP CEO Luiz Mór was complaining about this Natal destination.
He said clearly that there will be no flight daily and between the lines people could read that there is a possibility they will cut flight.
Occupation is getting worse as it seems.

Occupation is getting worse as it seems.
Latest figures from Braz.Gov. Infraero:

International arivals and departures jan/febr 2013.
They count arrivals AND departures separatly, so an average tourist is counted twice.
To have any idea of the number of turists divide the numbers by 2.
But, about 60% (or more) of these are local from Natal going to Europe, as all TAP flights from the NE to Lisbon are crowded with Brazilians.
Here we go

Jan.2012 - 13.199
Jan.2013 - 11.142
= minus -16 %

Febr.2012 - 24.814
Febr.2013 - 19.928
= minus -22 %

This compared with some years ago:
Jan.2006 - 31.185
Feb.2006 - 57.797

Where is the grow ?

Yes I did, and the numbers for domestic passengers are also decreasing (+/- 4%).
If not TAM and GOL wouldn't cancel daily and weekly flights from/to Natal.
And TAM confirmed (read the newspapers),this is not a seasonal cut, it's permanent.

But I did it wrong, the numbers for february are ACCUMULATED numbers for 2013/2012, this is from 01/01-28/02. So the correct numbers for arriving + leaving int. pass. are a lot less for february:

Jan.2012 - 13.199
Jan.2013 - 11.142
= minus -16 %

Febr.2012 - 11.615
Febr.2013 - 8.786
= minus -26 %

So divide these numbers by 2 and you have more or less the number of international passengers, including the 60% Brazilians that go to or come back from Lisbon/Amsterdam.
This makes some 480 foreign travelers/tourists a week.
In the high season.
Poor results for the biggest LatAm airport and 6th largest in the world to (ever ?) come.
I think most of the smallest airports in Europe or Africa do it better.

Unbelievable. Just 480 foreign passenger a week in high season!!!!! Faro in the Algarve scores 5.6 million passengers in 2012.

Don't understand me wrong.
Natal had some 2,5 million departures and arrivels in 2012.
This means some 1,3 million passengers. Domestic and international.
But just a very few of them are foreign tourists and it's declining fast.

But even domestic tourism is getting worse.
It's to expensive in the NE. Not only Natal.
Brazilians are making sea-cruises massively the last years.
In the 2011/2012 high season almost 1 million Brazilians made a cruise instead of going to the NE or wherever on vacation.
Think this 2012/13 season they must have passed the 1 million.
They get more for their money making a cruise.
Or they go abroad, even that is cheaper now a days.

4% isn't really a decrease and can easily be accounted for by the different carnival dates.

How many flights do TAM and GOL make daily into Natal? If there was a big drop then how come the only flight that GOL dropped was the Natal to Recife?

Rob
Strange question for someone who is promoting the "Booming" theory.
If tourism (and every thing) was realy "Booming" there, I think TAM and GOL would fall on their knees and beg the ANAC for more flights to Natal. (and TAP)
Already thinking of the future.
Instead of that, they are cutting the number of flights.
Yes in a booming situation a decrease of 4% is a bad sign.
I bet the "fora de epoca" carnival will also show decrease in flights and passengers comparing 2013 with 2012.
It so simple.

Why don't you use your real name, do you think you are some sort of Brazilian hero?

I think you should use the name of the Lone Ranger's partner :)

Those images of the airport are a bit outdated already. They say they are from April 2013 but this photo was taken a while back already and as you can see, the terminals are a lot more advanced.

There are a lot of people out there still today advertising the largest airport in the world but if you do a search on this forum, specifically the thread about the airport, there is a lot of information there which will help you understand the airport better.

LoneRanger , the airline cost to fly from Europe to Brasil is costly and unless the prices come down there will be further decline and with Brazilians borrowing up to the maximum ...domestic flights decline too . Also, Brazil is no longer cheap so is no longer favourable for overseas tourists. Internal basic flights are extremely expensive, hotels ,taxis, clothes shopping, drinking wine is expensive and not of great quality ,people getting ripped off when investing in property is another negative ,but hey ho Brazilians are fun .

They "oficialy opened" the "Cidade da Música" in Rio de Janeiro 3 times, and it's still closed.

Don't get your hopes up.
