In my opinion it is healthy for property markets to take a breather, or even consolidate at lower levels, every now and again rather than moving constantly higher to levels which are unsustainable in the longer term. There is nothing like a dose of common sense to get investors thinking!

The more stretched the valuation of any property market the more chance of a significant downturn where investors finally ship out and look elsewhere. Any consolidation or correction in the Canadian property market should help smooth out future performance but it is dangerous for governments to get too involved in what are deemed to be "free markets".

The further a market is stretched, like an elastic band, the bigger the eventual correction.
